For generations, women lived with a high risk of developing breast cancer, most without ever knowing it. Today, with advances in genetic testing for breast cancer, genomics and breast cancer screening and a wealth of knowledge about potential causes, women at high risk can take steps to reduce their chances of developing breast cancer.
At City of Hope Chicago, our High-Risk Breast Cancer Program offers services for women who know they’re at risk for breast cancer or may be concerned about their likelihood of developing the disease.
No one can predict if or when she’ll get breast cancer. But the multidisciplinary team of cancer experts, genetic counselors and supportive care providers at City of Hope Chicago will work with you to determine the level of your risk and empower you to take control.
You’ll meet with a counselor to assess your inherited risk and determine whether genetic testing is recommended.
For those who qualify, City of Hope provides screening with digital breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography, ultrasound and breast MRI.
Your team of experts will help identify risk factors you can control and help you develop lifestyle strategies to reduce your risk.

City of Hope has developed the Risk Management Tool (RMT) to help you determine whether you’re at an elevated risk of developing breast or other common cancers. It only takes a few minutes to answer some basic questions about yourself, your family history and your lifestyle. Once you’ve finished answering the questions, the RMT checks your risk for cancer and offers you an action plan to help you manage your risk and determine whether further tests or other interventions may be recommended.
