Allison Murray, MD, is a Breast Surgical Oncologist and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago. Dr. Murray works closely with patients diagnosed with breast cancer and with their multidisciplinary cancer care teams to determine how surgery may play a role in their treatment regimen. Her patient-centered approach to care is founded on empathy, innovation and clinical excellence.
“I am passionate about empowering patients in their treatment decisions, incorporating advances such as nipple-sparing mastectomy and de-escalation of care strategies,” says Dr. Murray, who was partly inspired to pursue a career in medicine by her parents, both of whom worked in the medical field.
She chose to specialize in breast surgical oncology because it offers her the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of her patients as both an expert surgeon and a collaborator.
“For most patients, the breast is such an integral part of your identity,” she says. “I want to make sure that the end result of treatment for breast cancer is something that every patient is happy with.”
After earning her medical degree and completing a general surgery residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, Dr. Murray pursued a specialized fellowship in breast surgical oncology at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Her clinical interests include oncoplastic techniques, racial and socioeconomic disparities in health care, global medicine and genetics in breast cancer care.
Board-certified in general surgery, Dr. Murray is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She is also a longtime advocate of community engagement, having participated in free health care initiatives and educational outreach.
Outside City of Hope, Dr. Murray is a talented vocalist and historical costumer, with hobbies ranging from musical theater to classical literature and knitting.
