More than half of patients at City of Hope travel to one of our hospitals from another state. Why? Our physicians have expertise in treating many forms of cancer, including rare, complex and advanced-stage diseases. Our hospitals offer both standard-of-care and state-of-the-art technologies and tools to fight cancer, while supporting patients’ quality of life by providing therapies designed to help them prevent and manage side effects. Each patient receives an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan customized to his or her needs by a team of cancer experts collaborating on that patient’s care.

Covering the cost of travel for you and a caregiver*

At City of Hope, we understand the stress and expense that comes with traveling for treatment. That’s why we make it our priority to see that your treatment is as convenient, affordable and stress-free as possible. One of the ways we do that is by paying certain travel costs for qualified patients* and their caregivers, and hosting their stay in local hotels at deeply reduced rates.

Our experienced team will work with you in arranging the various aspects of your visit, from gathering your medical records to scheduling your appointments and, for qualifying patients, making your travel and lodging arrangements.* 

Travel To-Dos Handled by City of Hope? Cost
Reserve airline/train ticket.
For certain patients and their caregivers, City of Hope will cover the cost of your flight, train ride, or reimburse you for miles if you drive.*
Make hotel/lodging arrangements.
City of Hope offers on- and off-site guest rooms at reduced rates and has partnered with nearby hotels to offer rooms at reduced rates.
Arrange for transportation from the airport or train station to the hospital or to your lodging site.
City of Hope helps arrange ground transportation services, including trips to and from the hospital and local lodging sites.
Determine where and what to eat during the visit.
City of Hope offers healthy and affordable meal options for patients and their caregivers at the hospital.**

Once here, our staff is available to continue assisting with your travel coordination and other needs throughout your treatment.

Prior to your visit, a City of Hope representative will:

  • Verify your insurance benefits
  • Obtain your medical records and transfer them to your City of Hope hospital
  • Schedule your initial appointment
  • Schedule your air or train travel*
  • Reserve your accommodations at our on-site guest quarters or at a nearby hotel
  • Greet you at the airport or train station and bring you to the hospital, or to your nearby lodging site*

Once you arrive, each of our hospitals provides:

  • Concierge services (an information station at the hospital)
  • On-site dining options
  • Shuttle service to the airport*, local restaurants, shops and attractions
  • Fitness facility for you and your caregivers (at select facilities)
  • Patient and caregiver activities, classes and support groups
  • An on-site pharmacy/supplement center
  • Free wi-fi throughout the hospital

* If you are a beneficiary of a government health insurance program, such as Medicare, City of Hope is not permitted to provide travel, lodging or transportation benefits.
