Learn About Bone Cancer

Bone cancer forms in the cells of bones. Bones provide structure, framework and shape to the body, and act as braces for muscles to facilitate movement and protect internal organs. Primary bone cancer develops when a tumor originates and grows inside a bone. Secondary bone cancer, the most prevalent type of this disease, forms when cancer cells spread (metastasize) from another part of the body to adjacent bones. Symptoms may include bone pain, swelling and fractures.

Bone Cancer Diagnostic Evaluations

Our doctors use a variety of diagnostic tools and technologies, including imaging and laboratory tests, to screen for bone cancer. Careful analysis of these test results helps us determine the cancer’s specific type and stage. This important information will also be used to help guide your treatment plan, which will be personalized to your needs, goals and preferences. Knowing that waiting for answers often adds to patients’ anxiety, we work to deliver diagnostic results in a timely and efficient manner.

Bone Cancer Supportive Care Services

Cancer treatment may cause side effects that impact quality of life. Depending on the location of the cancer, surgery may be required to remove portions of bone, muscle, nerves or blood vessels. Side effects may include weakness and the risk of fracture of remaining bone. You may be referred to an oncology rehabilitation specialist after surgery to help improve your strength and function. Additional supportive care clinicians are available to help manage side effects and improve your quality of life.
