About liver cancer

Liver cancer begins in the tissues of the liver, which is located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath the diaphragm and above the stomach. The liver helps store nutrients from food, aids with digestion and clears toxins from the body, among other important functions.

Liver cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, with a high rate of incidence in Africa and Asia. Liver cancer is less common in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates 42,030 new cases of liver cancer and intrahepatic bile duct cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2019.
