World-renowned oncologist Dr. Ricardo H. Alvarez is recognized for his contributions to the multidisciplinary management of breast cancer, particularly inflammatory breast cancer. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), Dr. Alvarez is Medical Director of the Breast Cancer Center in Atlanta and Medical Director of Cancer Research. He is mainly focused on the treatment of advanced breast cancer and inflammatory breast cancer.

“I work as part of a multidisciplinary team,” says Dr. Alvarez. “Surgical oncologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists discuss each patient. We outline a clear plan before our patients begin treatment. This is a very advanced group of medical professionals who dedicate the vast majority of their time to treating breast cancer. I think being treated at a cancer center, and seeing a specialist dedicated to treating breast cancer, rather than a general medical oncologist, can make a big difference for patients.”

Dr. Alvarez joined CTCA® in 2014 and serves as Principal Investigator for many large clinical trials responsible for improving and expanding treatment options of breast cancer. “Clinical trials are an important way to help advance the treatment of breast cancer patients,” says Dr. Alvarez. “The possibility to offer patients clinical trials is the reason I am at CTCA.”

Dr. Alvarez’s research studies are published in many peer-reviewed journals, including Breast Cancer Research and Treatment and The Annals of Oncology. He has written more than 100 articles, abstracts and book chapters, and he regularly presents his work at national and international conferences.

Licensed to practice medicine in Texas and Georgia, Dr. Alvarez is Board Certified in Internal Medicine & Medical Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), the American College of Physicians (ACP), Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA), Texas Medical Association (TMA) and the Asociacion Medica Argentina (AMA).

“Breast cancer is a conglomerate of multiple diseases. I don’t believe that every patient should have the same recommendation,” he says. “My job is to provide options to my patients to help them make informed decisions.”

Dr. Alvarez completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas at Houston Health Science Center, and a Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Later in his career, he earned a Master of Science in Cancer Biology at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Texas.

He currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgia Regents University in Atlanta. Prior to that, he was Assistant Professor of Breast Medical Oncology at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He also served as Assistant Professor with the Morgan Welch Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Program and Clinic in Houston, Texas.

When he is not at CTCA, Dr. Alvarez enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, skiing and returning to his hometown for vacations.

Patient ratings and comments

The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible CTCA patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five-star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient’s experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, CTCA.

You don't have a high enough score on this survey for me to convey the confidence I have in Dr. Alvarez. When he told me he had been at MD Anderson for 15 years, then told me he had worked elbow to elbow with the very specialist we took my daughter, [...] to, I began to weep. Literally right there in front of him, I wept. God showed me that he had moved Dr. Alvarez from MD Anderson, had taken me from [...] to [...] in total blind faith, and lead me right to that spot and I was exactly where I was supposed to be. THEN he told me he had completed 6 or 7 year research on BRCA 1 & 2. God assured me that I was going to be ok. Thru the wisdom, gifts and talents that God has blessed Dr. Alvarez with, I had a miraculous response to chemo. The know in my left breast was completely gone after my [...] chemo treatment when they did the ultrasound. It was the size of my thumbprint.[...] When my pathology came back there was no cancer in anything ! Dr. Alvarez was extremely pleased and elated. I just sat there in disbelief and was somewhat confused. I wanted to celebrate and be happy with him... I could not. I had lost my [...] daughter just [...] months prior to finding the knot in my breast. When Dr. Alvarez told me the great news all I could think was, "why didn't [...] get these results?".... "why didn't [...]get this care?" And so I asked him with tears streaming down my face. His shoulders sunk and he came over to me and put his arm around me and said, "I dun't know.... I dun't know" with a tear in his eye. This man of great wisdom stood in humility who had brought healing and health back to my body . stood there humble with his arm around my shoulders humbly saying I dun't know in that amazing accent of his and brought healing to a grieving mother's heart and spirit. And I don't think he has a clue about this. I know God has gifted Dr. Alvarez with such amazing wisdom and knowledge, gifts and talents and I am forever humbled, and thankful that He allowed me to be one of the many people blessed and healed .. and now [...] years cancer free. Thank you CTCA for having him come to Newnan. You are blessed to have him..... let me be a voice for the many patients to say.... WE are blessed to have him. I thank my God for him all the time.

About our star ratings

The patient star ratings are an average of all responses to physician-related questions on our nationally recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) measures patient satisfaction as part of our effort toward continuous improvement in all aspects of the patient experience. We partner with Press Ganey®, a third-party-validated organization with over 30 years of experience supporting over 26,000 health care organizations, to survey our patients about their recent experiences at CTCA®.

Why is this information important?

CTCA is committed to transparency. Not only do the surveys allow us to continuously improve our services, but we hope these ratings will help you feel confident in your decision to seek care at CTCA.

How are the star scores calculated?

All eligible CTCA patients receive a survey from Press Ganey within one to two weeks after their treatment occurrence. In addition to being asked about their overall experience at CTCA, patients are asked to score the level of confidence they have in their provider, as well as the likelihood they will recommend the physician to others. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five-star rating, with one star being the lowest possible rating and five stars being the highest.

Are all comments included?

In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. Patients’ names and other identifying information are removed from the comments for confidentiality and patient privacy. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, do not relate to the patient’s experience with the doctor involved, or are statements that cannot be verified as factual. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, CTCA. All ratings are included even if a comment is excluded.

Why don’t all physicians have ratings and comments?

Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys. This helps us ensure that the sample size is large enough to give you an accurate representation of the physician's care.

Star ratings and comments are not available for all physicians or specialties. The validated Press Ganey survey captures patient experience feedback with the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which include only medical, radiation and in-office gynecologic oncology services. Gynecologic surgeries are not evaluated at this time because a different survey tool would be required.

Can anyone provide ratings and responses for a physician?

No. Only patients who are under the care of the physician can provide a response through the Press Ganey survey. Eligible patients receive the survey either by mail or email after their treatment occurrence. Survey responses are completely voluntary.

How do you protect patient information for those who have responded to the survey?

Patient privacy is of the utmost importance to us. If a review comment includes any information that could identify a patient (e.g., name, etc.), it is removed from the comment prior to publishing on the physician’s bio page. All patient information that has been removed from a comment is designated with an ellipsis, or “[…]”.

How often are the scores updated?

Press Ganey surveys are sent out all year long. All patient ratings and reviews are regularly updated and published within a month of receiving the responses. Ratings and reviews remain on a physician’s bio page for one year after being published. After that time period, the ratings and reviews older than a year are removed to ensure the most current information is available.
