About Me

William Dale, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.S.C.O., is the George Tsai family chair in geriatric oncology, a professor of supportive care medicine and the director of City of Hope’s® Center for Cancer and Aging. Dr. Dale is a nationally recognized expert in providing cancer care for older adults and the first non-oncologist to receive the prestigious B.J. Kennedy Geriatric Oncology Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology in recognition of his work in the fields of aging, cancer care and supportive medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Dale has focused on improving care for older adults receiving treatment for cancer and those who are cancer survivors. He founded and continues to lead Specialized Oncology Care and Research in Elders (SOCARE), a program designed to provide personalized, team-based care that supports older patients as they undergo their cancer journey. He also serves as director of the Older Adults Specialized Interdisciplinary Services (OASIS) program.

Dr. Dale has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers on how to better care for vulnerable patients, in particular, older adults and their families. He has received ongoing support for his work from organizations including the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society. He also leads a major national project to bring together experts across the U.S. focused on aging and cancer, helping to shape the future of care for older adults with cancer.

After earning both a medical degree and a Ph.D. in health policy at the University of Chicago, Dr. Dale went on to complete his internal medicine training and a fellowship in geriatrics at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is board-certified in both geriatrics and palliative medicine.

Patient reviews
The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible City of Hope patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five- star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient's experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, City of Hope.
