Physician, George Tsai Family Chair in Geriatric Oncology in Honor of Arti Hurria, M.D.
William Dale, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.S.C.O., is the George Tsai family chair in geriatric oncology, a professor of supportive care medicine and the director of City of Hope’s® Center for Cancer and Aging. Dr. Dale is a nationally recognized expert in providing cancer care for older adults and the first non-oncologist to receive the prestigious B.J. Kennedy Geriatric Oncology Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology in recognition of his work in the fields of aging, cancer care and supportive medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dale has focused on improving care for older adults receiving treatment for cancer and those who are cancer survivors. He founded and continues to lead Specialized Oncology Care and Research in Elders (SOCARE), a program designed to provide personalized, team-based care that supports older patients as they undergo their cancer journey. He also serves as director of the Older Adults Specialized Interdisciplinary Services (OASIS) program.
Dr. Dale has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers on how to better care for vulnerable patients, in particular, older adults and their families. He has received ongoing support for his work from organizations including the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society. He also leads a major national project to bring together experts across the U.S. focused on aging and cancer, helping to shape the future of care for older adults with cancer.
After earning both a medical degree and a Ph.D. in health policy at the University of Chicago, Dr. Dale went on to complete his internal medicine training and a fellowship in geriatrics at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is board-certified in both geriatrics and palliative medicine.
