Waasil Kareem, MD, is an interventional pulmonologist and assistant clinical professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte.
Dr. Kareem cares for people with lung and chest conditions using minimally invasive approaches that allow for both advanced diagnosis and treatment. His expertise includes robotic bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, medical thoracoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy and procedures to open blocked airways with stents or thermal techniques. With each patient, Dr. Kareem emphasizes listening, clear communication and shared decision-making. He finds it deeply rewarding to help someone breathe more easily after a procedure.
Dr. Kareem completed his medical degree at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, then trained in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as chief resident. He went on to complete a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, becoming chief fellow, followed by subspecialty training in interventional pulmonology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Earlier in his career, he also worked in biomedical research and health policy.
In addition to English, he speaks Urdu and Hindi. Away from the clinic, he enjoys following his favorite sports teams and spending time with his wife and young daughter.
