Thomas J. Gernon, M.D., is a board-certified otolaryngologist and an associate clinical professor of head and neck surgery at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte.
Dr. Gernon has a strong commitment to community outreach and program development. During his time as an assistant professor in the Division of Otolaryngology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tuscon, he was instrumental in creating and expanding the Head & Neck Oncology Program, serving as its co-director and as medical director of the Outpatient Surgical Specialty Clinics. Under his leadership, the program became a major referral hub in Southern Arizona for patients with advanced head and neck tumors. His clinical interests include diagnosing and managing cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx and salivary glands, with a particular emphasis on HPV-related head and neck cancers. Dr. Gernon’s work has been featured in peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented at both regional and national medical conferences.
Dr. Gernon earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle and went on to receive his medical degree from the UW School of Medicine. While in medical school, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in recognition of his academic excellence. He began his medical training with a general surgery internship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he also completed his residency in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. He later completed a fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction at the University of Washington.
