Tanya Barauskas Dorff, MD, is a professor of medical oncology and therapeutics research at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte and director of the institute’s innovative Genitourinary Disease Program. A world-renowned expert in genitourinary (GU) cancers with a special focus on developing novel therapies for prostate cancer, Dr. Dorff works with patients diagnosed with all types of GU disease, including prostate, kidney, bladder, testicular and penile cancer.
At City of Hope, Dr. Dorff oversees one of the largest GU cancer clinical trial portfolios in the nation. Her research experience and interests in the field of prostate cancer care include: designing and conducting trials that explore both immunotherapy and new treatment combinations; investigating the role that dietary and lifestyle factors play in treatment effectiveness: and studying the ways in which certain therapies may impact cognitive function.
In collaboration with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Dr. Dorff is also overseeing efforts to develop new immune-based strategies for prostate cancer that employ chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells – treatments that have to date been primarily used for treating blood disorders. Most recently, Dr. Dorff received a Prostate Cancer Foundation/Pfizer grant to research the use of the PARP inhibitor talazoparib for ethnically diverse patient populations, collaborating with Zijie (ZJ) Sun, MD, PhD, at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Dorff earned her medical degree at the UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, where she was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society, before completing her internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and her subspecialty training in hematology and oncology at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center.
Before joining City of Hope, Dr. Dorff was a faculty member at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She is a physician-scholar with more than 75 publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Cancer, Lancet Oncology and Journal of Clinical Oncology, and she serves as a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s Prostate Cancer Guidelines Committee and the co-chair for prostate cancer on the SWOG genitourinary committee.
