Sumana Veeravelli, MD, is Medical Oncologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Gilbert, where she diagnoses and treats a wide range of cancer types and blood disorders, with a particular focus on cancers of the prostate, testicles, bladder and kidneys, as well as breast cancer.
Dr. Veeravelli was drawn to a career in cancer care because it offered a unique combination of intellectual challenge, scientific innovation and the ability to form long-lasting relationships with her patients.
“During my early clinical training, I witnessed firsthand how cancer care demands not only up-to-date knowledge and technical skill, but also empathy, adaptability and teamwork,” she says. “Caring for patients facing some of life’s most difficult moments—whether navigating a new diagnosis, receiving complex treatments or overcoming social barriers—solidified my desire to work in a field where connection and scientific progress go hand in hand.”
In her clinical work, she strives to provide personalized, evidence-based care that supports both her patients’ treatment plans and their overall well-being. Dr. Veeravelli brings expertise in a wide range of treatment and diagnostic options, including newer approaches such as targeted therapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy and liquid biopsy.
After earning her medical degree, Dr. Veeravelli remained at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona to complete her internal medicine residency. She went on to pursue a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of California, Davis. As a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology, Dr. Veeravelli has published multiple articles on topics including health disparities and cardiac health management for cancer patients.
“I am inspired by City of Hope’s unmatched expertise in oncology, its dedication to advancing new therapies through research and its collaborative, multidisciplinary approach,” says Dr. Veeravelli. “Being here allows me to grow as a clinician and care for patients in a place that truly treats the whole person.”
Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Veeravelli enjoys traveling with her husband and spending time outdoors, while also taking on the new adventure of becoming a parent.
