Stephen Gruber, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., is a doctor and researcher who is internationally known for his work in cancer genetics and precision medicine and the vice president of City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte. Passionate about using the latest advances in science to create more personalized cancer care for patients and their families, Dr. Gruber is also an expert on Lynch syndrome and inherited forms of colorectal cancer. His approach to working with patients is to helps them understand their cancer risks and guide them through their options for both cancer prevention and treatment.
At City of Hope, Dr. Gruber leads the Center for Precision Medicine, where doctors and scientists use a person’s unique genetic makeup to create the most accurate and effective care plans possible using the latest advances in oncology. His research focuses on how cancer is passed down in families, with a focus on cancers including melanoma and colorectal cancer. The goal of this work is to improve early detection rates and outcomes.
Dr. Gruber earned his medical degree and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, before pursuing a fellowship in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, followed by a clinical medical genetics fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He also holds a doctorate and master of public health from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Gruber’s work has been funded since 1998 by the National Institutes of Health, making him a recognized leader in the field of cancer research.
