Hematologist-Oncologist
At City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, hematologist-oncologist Shukaib Arslan, M.D., specializes in caring for patients with blood cancers and bone marrow transplant needs. His passion for this work is deeply personal, shaped by his own family’s experience, and he finds it very rewarding to help patients and their loved ones through difficult times. Known for his compassionate approach and strong communication skills, Dr. Arslan believes in a team-based approach to treating complex blood disorders, ensuring that patients clearly understand their condition and treatment options so they can make informed decisions.
Dr. Arslan completed medical school at King Edward Medical University in Pakistan, followed by residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit. He then pursued fellowships in hematology-oncology at Michigan State University and in bone marrow transplant at City of Hope National Medical Center. He has also been recognized for his outstanding performance on the national hematology board exam, earning a place on the ABIM Hematology standard setting committee.
In both clinical care and research, Dr. Arslan focuses on bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, donor selection, graft versus host disease (GVHD), relapse of acute leukemia after transplant and innovative cellular therapies. He leads and participates in multiple clinical trials exploring new treatments for acute leukemia and transplant-related complications, including therapies for GVHD and strategies to improve outcomes when using alternative donors.
Dr. Arslan also serves on City of Hope’s Donor Selection Committee, where he helps match patients with optimal transplant donors. This highly detailed process considers factors such as genetic markers, blood type, age and health history to improve each patient’s chance of success.
An active researcher and educator, Dr. Arslan has published articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to book chapters and presented his work at national and international conferences. He is also a member of the CIBMTR Chronic Leukemia Working Committee, helping to advance knowledge and care in the field.
