About Me

At City of Hope Chicago, Shency Varughese serves patients in the hospital’s gastroenterology department. She joined City of Hope in February 1993 and works on a patient-focused team providing care and treatment to patients with gastroenterology-related cancers and disease. Through her years at City of Hope, Varughese has continued her education and became a nurse practitioner in 2017.

Varughese is part of a team of doctors, nurses and clinicians providing whole-person care. She works closely with patients throughout their journey, forming close relationships by getting to know them and their families and helping to offer comprehensive options tailored to each individual’s needs.

“Caring for cancer patients touches my heart and soul,” says Varughese. “My patients have taught me how to be thankful for the small things and appreciate each and every day.”

Varughese earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India, and earned a Master of Nursing degree in leadership at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. Varughese graduated with a Master of Nursing degree in family nursing practice at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon, Wisconsin. She is an active member of professional organizations, including the Oncology Nursing Society and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Outside of City of Hope, Varughese likes spending time with her friends and family. She also enjoys traveling, shopping and volunteering at her church.

Patient ratings
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
