- About Me
Shana Wingo, MD, FACOG, joined City of Hope® in November 2023 as a Gynecologic Oncologist with 13 years’ experience serving patients in the Phoenix area. She primarily cares for patients at City of Hope Cancer Care North Phoenix. Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in gynecologic oncology, she has expertise treating all gynecologic malignancies.
As a surgeon, Dr. Wingo has specialized experience in minimally invasive robotic procedures designed to reduce side effects and accelerate recovery, for both malignant and benign tumors. Designated by Phoenix Magazine as a Top Doctor eight times, Dr. Wingo has performed more than 3,000 robotic surgeries and has been tapped by a major manufacturer, Da Vinci, to teach other doctors.
Dr. Wingo is a comprehensive gynecologic oncologist, performing a wide range of surgeries, administering systemic and targeted chemotherapies and providing patients with ongoing surveillance through survivorship. She’s especially excited about the opportunities offered through advances in surgery and emerging immunotherapies.
Dr. Wingo prizes the rapport she builds with patients, striving to connect both as a doctor and a human being in providing them with the comfort they need. Getting to understand her patients’ lives, priorities and values helps her empower them to take an active role in directing their care.
“Compassion and honesty are the cornerstones of my approach,” Dr. Wingo says. “Facing a cancer diagnosis and everything that comes with treatment naturally raise so many difficult emotions, and I believe it’s my responsibility as a provider to go beyond medical treatment and tend to the individual who’s going through it. I want my patients to know they can trust me to take care of them.”
Dr. Wingo earned her medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she also completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, serving as chief resident, and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology. Before City of Hope, she was a gynecologic oncologist at Cancer & Blood Specialists of Arizona. She continues to serve as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Arizona/Banner University Medical Center Phoenix, where she’s involved in resident and fellow education.
During and since her postgraduate training, Dr. Wingo has published several studies in peer-reviewed biomedical journals and has given more than a dozen lectures, covering topics including health disparities, robotic surgery protocols, cancer genetics and molecular mechanisms that underlie gynecologic cancers.
Active in her profession, she’s a former member of the Committee for Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity and the Communications Committee of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, as well as the American Society of Clinical Oncology, NRG Oncology, the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Conversant in Spanish, Dr. Wingo loves spending time outside the clinic with her husband and two sons. Her favorite pastimes include yoga, enjoying the outdoors and traveling.
- Patient ratings
- Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
