About Me

Sarah Friend, MD, is a Medical Oncologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta, where she specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Triple board-certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Friend has deep expertise in treating hormone-receptor positive, HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancer. She is also committed to growing City of Hope Atlanta’s clinical trials program and bringing more advanced therapies for breast cancer to her patients.

“Oncology isn’t just about treating disease, but about walking beside patients through one of the most profound journeys of their lives,” says Dr. Friend. “The privilege of helping them understand, find hope and feel supported—medically and emotionally—has kept me passionate about this field every single day.”

Drawn to oncology by the courage and resilience shown by cancer patients, Dr. Friend has clinical expertise in a wide range of leading-edge targeted therapies, antibody drug conjugates and precision medicine, as well as conventional treatment options for breast cancer. She also has a special focus on helping patients manage treatment-related toxicity and plan for survivorship.

Dr. Friend earned her medical degree from Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, then went on to complete an internal medicine residency at Orlando Health’s Orlando Regional Medical Center and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center in Albuquerque. A physician-scholar with multiple peer-reviewed publications to her name, Dr. Friend has been recognized as a “Top Oncologist” by Georgia Trend Magazine and received Emory University School of Medicine’s inaugural Palliative Care Champion Award while working there for nearly nine years.

Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Friend enjoys playing tennis and spending time with her husband, two daughters and their chihuahua, Bella.

Patient reviews
The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible City of Hope patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five- star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient's experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, City of Hope.
