Pathologist Rania Bakkar, MD, was drawn to medicine early in life, inspired by her parents’ work as physicians. Her decision to specialize in breast and gynecologic pathology was further shaped by witnessing close family members face cancer. In her clinical work at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, Dr. Bakkar emphasizes compassion while delivering highly advanced, evidence-based diagnostic care.
Dr. Bakkar’s decade of clinical experience and strong academic record includes 18 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Human Pathology, International Journal of Gynecologic Pathology and Cancer Cytopathology. In recognition of her scholarly contributions, the European Journal of Surgical Oncology honored her with a Certificate of Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing Award. Dr. Bakkar is frequently invited to deliver lectures, seminars and Grand Rounds presentations on breast and gynecologic pathology for pathologists and trainees at local, regional, national and international meetings. Much of her academic work focuses on biomarkers, highlighting their essential role in diagnosing and managing cancers that affect women.
Prior to joining City of Hope, Dr. Bakkar served as an associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she directed both the Anatomic Pathology Instructor Program and the Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program. Her academic career began at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where she held the role of assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine.
Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Bakkar enjoys painting and drawing.
