Paul Gellhaus, MD, is a Urologic Oncologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix, where he specializes in treating a range of urologic cancers and conditions in the retroperitoneum and pelvis, including kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate and testicular cancer. A recognized leader in his field, Dr. Gellhaus has made significant contributions to the field of urology, with a particular focus on robotic (minimally invasive) surgical techniques. His philosophy as a clinical provider is to help patients achieve their cancer treatment goals while preserving their quality of life.
Dr. Gellhaus earned his medical degree at the University of Iowa (UI) Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City.
After completing his internship and residency in urology at the distinguished Indiana University in Indianapolis, Dr. Gellhaus finished a urologic oncology and robotics fellowship at City of Hope Duarte in California.
Dr. Gellhaus returned as an assistant professor at UI to, where he was named director of the Medical Student Urology Clerkship and co-director of the Robotic Urology Oncology Surgery Fellowship. He was then quickly promoted to associate professor. During his time in Iowa City, he also started the robotics program at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, earning him the founder and chief of robotic surgery.
As a member of the UI Health Care's Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Gellhaus received multiple accolades for his work, including the Innovations in Clinical Care Award for co-developing the MRI/ultrasound fusion prostate biopsy program and the prestigious Urology Faculty Teacher & Mentor of the Year Award. He is a member of the American Urological Association and the Society of Urologic Oncology.
A physician-scholar, Dr. Gellhaus has written on topics ranging from robotic surgery outcomes to health-related quality of life in cancer patients and innovative surgical techniques in urologic oncology. His translational research includes projects on novel imaging techniques for prostate cancer, intravesical therapies for bladder cancer and outcomes in robotic surgery for kidney cancer. His goal is to bring innovative research into clinical practice to enhance his patients' experience and improve outcomes. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Gellhaus loves being outdoors, hiking and spending time with his wife and daughter.
