Nephrologist Mohamed El-Shahawy, M.D., M.P.H., M.H.A., is a clinical professor in the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at City of Hope® and also teaches medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology and has specialized training in kidney and pancreas transplantation.
Dr. El-Shahawy completed his internal medicine residency at St. Mary’s Hospital/Yale University School of Medicine, followed by advanced fellowships in nephrology and transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh and LAC/USC Medical Center.
He previously served as medical director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Keck-USC School of Medicine for more than 15 years. Since 2007, Dr. El-Shahawy has been the islet transplant physician for the City of Hope Islet Cell Transplant Program. His research focuses on improving care for people with diabetes who undergo islet cell transplantation and on finding better ways to manage chronic kidney disease in both diabetics and non-diabetics.
