About Me

Providing urgent care means knowing all the options and selecting the most appropriate intervention quickly. With nearly 40 years of experience, Dr. Michael Pinell, Lead Physician in Oncology Urgent Care at City of Hope Atlanta, brings a depth of experience and dedication to his role, delivering quality care for patients in need of urgent interventions.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of California, Dr. Pinell completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He spent three years at Scott Air Force Base Regional Hospital in Belleville, Illinois, completing a residency in Family Medicine.

Dr. Pinell turned his focus to emergency medicine early in his career. He served as Chairman of the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine at Hill Air Force Base Hospital in Utah and then continued to provide emergency care at hospitals in Utah and Texas.

Drawn to leadership positions in health care, Dr. Pinell completed management training at the American College of Physician Executives and then earned a Master of Health Administration at the University of Colorado. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he held consultancy and top administrative roles at several health care institutions in Texas, Florida and Georgia. During these years, he continued to provide essential emergency care at several hospitals. He has provided extensive leadership at the University of Utah in several administrative roles.

Throughout his career, Dr. Pinell has been an active member of his local community. He has served as a board member with medical and educational foundations while practicing medicine. Through his work with the Health Care Center for the Homeless in Orlando, Florida, he helped see that the medical community provided care beyond hospital walls.

Dr. Pinell has earned recognition as an outstanding physician and leader throughout his career. He joined City of Hope in May 2015 to provide acute and emergency care. His work focuses on determining the appropriate care for patients coping with acute issues, whether these are life-threatening conditions requiring immediate intervention, or problems that can be stabilized for later treatment.

Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Georgia, Dr. Pinell is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine. His written work guiding medical care in various settings has been published in numerous medical journals and in-house publications. He has been an invited speaker on health care management at several medical centers.

Patient ratings
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
