About Me

Southern California native Michael W. Lew, M.D., is a clinical professor of anesthesiology at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte

Dr. Lew began his academic journey at Columbia University in New York before earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. He went on to earn his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of USC, then completed a residency in anesthesiology at the same institution, where he served as chief resident in his final year.

Dr. Lew joined the Department of Anesthesiology at City of Hope in 1994 and achieved board certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology the following year. He has held leadership roles within the department, first as acting chair in 2001 and then as chair from 2002 to 2018.

Dr. Lew’s research centers on the anesthetic considerations of minimally invasive surgery, outcomes such as postoperative nausea, vomiting and brain health, as well as the use of noninvasive technologies during surgery. A dedicated USC alumnus, Dr. Lew has remained actively involved with his alma mater, including service on the Board of Governors for the USC Alumni Association.

Patient reviews
The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible City of Hope patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five- star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient's experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, City of Hope.
