Michael Sazon Gomez, MD, is a board-certified urologist with more than 15 years of experience caring for patients throughout the Chicagoland area. He specializes in diagnosing and treating cancers of the urinary tract, with a particular focus on prostate cancer. As part of the multidisciplinary team at City of Hope^® Cancer Center Chicago, he sees patients at the Downtown Chicago location, collaborating with specialists across disciplines to provide seamless, personalized urologic cancer care. He also maintains his primary practice with UroPartners.

Although medicine was always part of his life — his mother was a nurse — Dr. Gomez initially pursued a different career path.

"I kept coming back to medicine because I wanted to help people," he says. "Urology gives me the opportunity to build lasting relationships with my patients and care for them throughout every stage of their journey, from diagnosis and treatment to long-term follow-up."

He joined City of Hope because of its collaborative approach.

"Having urologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists working together allows us to create the optimal treatment plan for each patient and helps them make informed decisions with confidence,” he says.

Dr. Gomez treats prostate, kidney and other urologic cancers. His expertise includes robotic-assisted prostatectomy and nephrectomy, prostate biopsy and treating urinary conditions that may occur during or after cancer treatment, including urinary retention and incontinence. He also has a special interest in emerging focal therapies for prostate cancer that use advanced imaging and minimally invasive techniques to target tumors while preserving healthy tissue whenever appropriate.

Dr. Gomez earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio and completed residencies in general surgery and urology at the University of Toledo Medical Center, followed by advanced training in robotic-assisted urologic surgery at Henry Ford Hospital.

Outside of work, Dr. Gomez enjoys spending time with his family and cheering on the Chicago White Sox. As a long-time Chicago resident, he is proud to care for patients in the community he calls home. He also speaks Spanish.
