About Me

Mayuko Sakae, M.D., a palliative care and pain management physician at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, has more than 20 years of international experience helping people find relief from pain and suffering. Her career has taken her around the world — from caring for patients at Mother Teresa’s Home for the Dying in India to treating leprosy and malaria in Ethiopia and providing compassionate care to patients in Israel and across the U.S.

Driven by a lifelong passion for humanitarian work, Dr. Sakae combines advanced medical training with a deep understanding of the human spirit. She earned her medical degree from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center and completed her pediatrics residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. She then pursued a dual fellowship in pain and palliative medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Dr. Sakae also values integrative medicine — blending Western and Eastern practices such as acupuncture, meditation, herbal medicine and mind-body therapies to promote whole-person healing.

She is honored to bring her expertise to City of Hope’s Department of Supportive Care Medicine, where she helps patients manage pain and improve quality of life with compassion and respect.

Patient reviews
The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible City of Hope patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five- star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient's experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, City of Hope.
