Matthew Lee, M.D., MPH, is a medical oncologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte who specializes in treating lung cancer, including small cell lung cancer. His dedication to personalized, compassionate care is inspired by his own family’s experience with cancer, and he brings that empathy to every patient he treats.
Dr. Lee earned his medical degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical School and completed his residency in internal medicine at Hofstra University’s Northwell North Shore University Hospital. He then pursued a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also holds a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology, reflecting his strong interest in public health, health disparities and how real-world data can improve care.
His research explores leading-edge treatments, including targeted therapies, antibody-drug conjugates, immunotherapy, cellular therapies and liquid biopsies (ctDNA) for risk stratification and diagnosis. Dr. Lee is actively involved in several national research groups, including ECOG-ACRIN, ETCTN, the Hoosier Cancer Research Network and the Small Cell Lung Cancer Consortium.
He has authored more than a dozen peer-reviewed publications, participated in multiple clinical trials and taken part in global health efforts in Thailand, Uganda and Honduras. His work in lung cancer research has earned recognition from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Lee enjoys traveling, experiencing new cultures and cuisines and spending time outdoors running and hiking.
