Matthew Hedberg, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant clinical professor of pathology and skin cancer expert at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte. As a dermatopathologist, he studies skin tissue under the microscope to provide clear and precise reports that help care teams choose the optimal, most personalized treatment options for each patient. He also leads research focused on better understanding the biology of skin cancers and finding new ways to guide treatment.
Dr. Hedberg was drawn to medicine because it allowed him to combine his love of science with his commitment to helping people. He studied chemistry at the University of Utah, where he began his early cancer research in the lab of Nobel Prize–winning scientist Dr. Mario Capecchi. He went on to earn both a medical degree and a Ph.D. in biomedical research through the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh-Carnegie Mellon University. His research focused on understanding the genetic and molecular drivers of head and neck cancers and developing personalized medicine approaches to treatment.
He then completed residency training in anatomic pathology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, followed by specialized fellowship training in dermatopathology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Before joining City of Hope, he was a faculty member at Penn, where he also served as the first Waine C. Johnson Endowed Research Fellow of Dermatopathology. Dr. Hedberg’s work has been published in leading scientific journals, including Cancer Discovery, Nature Communications and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
