About Me

Dr. Kumar Gaurav joined City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago in October 2021. As an interventional pulmonologist, Dr. Gaurav focuses on the screening, diagnosis and staging of lung cancers, as well as management of malignant airway obstructions. He also provides care to patients who have pulmonary issues such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension and others. Dr. Gaurav works in the City of Hope Lung Cancer Center as part of a multidisciplinary team of cancer experts.

Dr. Gaurav also focuses on critical care medicine. He treats seriously or critically ill patients who have life-threating conditions. Dr. Gaurav works closely with patients in the intensive care unit at City of Hope to provide life-support, invasive-monitoring techniques and resuscitation.

Growing up as the son of a doctor. Dr. Gaurav knew from a young age that he wanted to be a physician. He saw the compassionate care that his father provided, and he now sees the direct benefits that personalized care provides patients. Dr. Gaurav knows how important it is to tailor communication and build relationships with patients, while fully supporting their emotional needs. He is determined to find the right treatment for each of his patients with lung cancer or other cancers affecting the lungs.

“The patient-centered approach to care is what drew me to City of Hope,” Dr. Gaurav says. “Working collaboratively with other doctors and supportive care clinicians, provides seamless whole-person care for our patients.”

Dr. Gaurav earned a medical degree from the B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan, Nepal. He then came to the United States to complete an internal medicine residency at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. While doing his residency, his mentor pushed him to discover more about pulmonary medicine and Dr. Gaurav embraced it. He went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Gaurav also finished a fellowship in interventional pulmonology from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine, Dr. Gaurav has practiced in a variety of health care settings since 2014. Before coming to City of Hope, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Kentucky. He is an active member of several professional organizations including the Society of Critical Care Medicine and American Thoracic Society.

Staying current on the latest treatments and technologies is important to Dr. Gaurav. He is trained to use robotic bronchoscopy. These advances allow for better precision and control during biopsies and other surgeries.

Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Gaurav enjoys spending time with his friends and he is very close with his family. He also likes photography, traveling and reading the financial news.

Patient reviews
The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible City of Hope patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five- star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient's experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, City of Hope.
