Kayla Lakin-Southern, DO, is the Director of the Evaluation and Treatment Center (ETC) at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix. The ETC provides urgent and emergency medical care for patients who are receiving treatment at City of Hope and who experience health issues related to their cancer or its treatment. The ETC supports all specialties and departments at City of Hope Phoenix.
Over the course of more than 40 years as a physician, Dr. Lakin-Southern has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including family practice, hospice care, immigrant clinics and women’s health centers. However, the focus of her career has been emergency medicine. Before joining City of Hope, Dr. Lakin-Southern held a variety of positions in the field across Oklahoma, and she remains an adjunct professor at Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.
In her clinical work, Dr. Lakin-Southern treats a wide range of urgent medical issues, including cancer-related complications like pneumonitis and mucositis, side effects of cancer itself like bowel pain and obstruction and hydronephrosis and non-cancer-related conditions such as injuries or infections. Her overall goal for her patients is that they feel seen, heard and well cared for during their stay at City of Hope.
After earning her medical degree at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, Dr. Lakin-Southern went on to complete an internship at Saginaw Osteopathic Hospital in Michigan. She is a member of multiple professional associations, including the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Osteopathic Association.
Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Lakin-Southern enjoys spending time with her husband, her seven children and her 13 grandchildren.
