Professional Experience
As a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, Kavita Vakharia, M.D., partners with patients to develop individualized treatment plans that use state-of-the-art, minimally invasive techniques to restore form and function after treatment for a wide range of cancer types.
Dr. Vakharia received her medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, where she also completed an integrated residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery. She went on to pursue an orthopedic hand and microvascular fellowship at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and later received advanced training in skin cancer surgery as a Poche Fellow at the Melanoma Institute Australia in Sydney.
A committed physician-scientist, Dr. Vakharia has authored more than a dozen peer-reviewed publications and is passionate about advancing research that improves surgical outcomes. She was drawn to City of Hope’s unique approach to bringing discoveries from the research laboratory to patients requiring leading-edge care.
Beyond her clinical and academic work, Dr. Vakharia has contributed to the field of medical communications. She worked with ABC News' Medical Journalism Unit in New York City and served as a medical advisor for the popular television series Grey’s Anatomy.
