About Me

Joseph Alvarnas, M.D., believes his greatest calling is caring for people when they are sick and in need. Known for his compassionate bedside manner, he also champions healthy living and preventive care as powerful tools in the fight against cancer. 

Since joining City of Hope® in 2008, Dr. Alvarnas has served as vice president for government affairs and chief clinical advisor for AccessHope. He previously led value-based analytics and clinical quality for the City of Hope Alpha Stem Cell Clinic. He earned his medical degree from the University of California San Francisco and completed fellowships in hematology and bone marrow transplantation at Stanford University Medical Center. 

A respected voice on issues from hematology to health policy, Dr. Alvarnas is editor-in-chief of Evidence-Based Oncology and chairs the American Society of Hematology Committee on Practice.
