Radiation oncologist Jose Bazan, M.D., M.S., chose medicine as a way to combine his love of math and science with his desire to help others. His interest in cancer care grew after both of his parents faced the disease. Today, he focuses on making sure patients at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte feel informed and confident about their treatment choices.
Dr. Bazan specializes in breast cancer and joined City of Hope in 2023 as director of breast radiation. Before that, he led Breast Radiation Oncology at The Ohio State University. His dedication to the field is reflected in his research, involvement in clinical trials and service on national and international committees. He also serves as City of Hope’s clinical director of quality and safety.
A major focus of Dr. Bazan’s research is understanding and addressing health disparities, especially in Hispanic communities. He has led studies highlighting gaps in how race and ethnicity are considered in research and works with national groups, including the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the NRG Oncology Clinical Trials group, to help improve equity in cancer care.
Outside of work, Dr. Bazan enjoys running, ballet, movies and traveling. He also loves spending time with his wife and their three black cats — Mo, Cesar and Valentina.
