John Farley,MD, FACOG, FACS

“The most important thing we do is listen to our patients and support them along their journey,” says Dr. John H. Farley, a Gynecologic Oncologist at City of Hope Phoenix.

Dr. Farley is renowned in the field of gynecologic oncology and brings more than 30 years of expertise to the City of Hope team. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Dr. Farley earned his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. He then completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology, both at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Highly decorated in his military career and elsewhere, Dr. Farley has earned a Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Order of Military Medical Merit and an APGO Excellence in Teaching Award. He was named Top Doctor by Phoenix magazine and has headed the gynecology department at medical centers ranked among the Best Hospitals for Gynecology by US News and World Report.

From 2014-2017, Dr. Farley served as Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology for Cancer Treatment Centers of America, which is now City of Hope Phoenix. He now looks forward to carrying on his standard of excellence in gynecologic cancer care with City of Hope.

Dr. Farley maintains professorships with the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix and the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, NE. He is also associated with University of Arizona Cancer Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, where he also practices. He has previously served in numerous other academic roles, including professorships with USUHS, University of Hawai’i at Manoa’s Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, and Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA.

During his time in the military, Dr. Farley also completed non-academic appointments, including serving as the Commander of Health Care at the Detainee Facility at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan and the Assistant Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. He has also sat on the Ovarian Cancer Research Program committee for Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs.

Dr. Farley has been invited to give presentations at many events, including physician seminars, Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Weekend in Washington, D.C.; American Association for Cancer Research; and American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago. The topics of his presentations ranged from gynecological malignancies to updates in cervical and ovarian cancer. He has also spoken at the International Meeting of the European Society of Gynecological Oncology, Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Farley has conducted extensive research on cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and general gynecologic cancer and has been published in numerous journals and book chapters, such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Prognostic and Predictive Factors in Gynecologic Cancers. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, NRG Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research and he serves on the board for the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.

Outside of his work in oncology, Dr. Farley enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children.
