“I am honored to be part of an exceptional team that delivers cutting-edge research and treatment,” says Javier Arias-Stella III, M.D., a pathologist who brings both strong expertise and a well-known family legacy to his work at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte.
Dr. Arias-Stella comes from a long line of influential physicians in Peru. His grandfather, a nationally recognized pathologist and former health and foreign minister, discovered the “Arias-Stella phenomenon,” which helped doctors better distinguish normal hormonal changes in the placenta from cancer. His father now leads the Arias-Stella Institute, the largest pathology laboratory in Peru.
Inspired by this heritage, Dr. Arias-Stella developed his own deep interest in surgical and molecular pathology. “I am passionate about this field because it helps us understand how diseases work and allows us to play a vital role in diagnosis and patient care,” he says.
Dr. Arias-Stella completed his medical degree at Universidad de San Martín de Porres in Lima, followed by advanced training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
