Supportive Care Medicine Physician
“This is the ideal environment to integrate all aspects of my training in psychiatry, palliative care and pain medicine.”
Supportive care physician Jaisha Mathew, MD, was inspired to pursue medicine by her father, whom she describes as “a model physician.” Growing up with his example, she learned to value both the scientific and deeply human sides of patient care.
In her role at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte and City of Hope Upland, Dr. Mathew helps patients manage the physical and social side effects of cancer and its treatment. Initially trained as a psychiatrist, Dr. Mathew discovered her true passion in interventional pain management—helping patients navigate both the physical discomfort and emotional challenges of serious illness.
Dr. Mathew earned her medical degree from the Medical University of Silesia, the largest medical school in Poland. She then completed her psychiatry residency and fellowship in hospice and palliative care at New York Medical College–Metropolitan Hospital in New York City, followed by a fellowship in pain medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
After working as a hospice physician in New York, Dr. Mathew found her professional home at City of Hope, where she feels her skills and values align perfectly with the mission of supportive care.
