As a board-certified Medical Oncologist and Hematologist, Iyad Hamarneh, MD, works closely with patients receiving care at City of Hope® Cancer Center Prescott for cancer types including breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma and multiple myeloma. Dr. Hamarneh was inspired to pursue a career in medicine after seeing how valuable the doctor-patient connection was when his grandfather and uncle received cancer treatment.
“I love the special relationship that connects the treating oncologist with patients and their loved ones during their cancer therapy,” he says. “My goal remains to treat the patient, not the cancer.”
Dr. Hamarneh is dedicated to using the latest advances in cancer care, such as immunotherapies and targeted therapy, to provide personalized approaches to his patients’ health needs.
A member of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, the American Society of Hematology and the Connective Tissue Oncology Society, Dr. Hamarneh has been involved in several research initiatives and held multiple leadership positions, including serving as president of the Northern Arizona division of an area oncology group, where he also held a clinical position since 2015.
Dr. Hamarneh began his medical education at the University of Jordan in Amman, then went on to complete an internal medicine residency at the King Hussein Cancer Center, respected as the largest community organization in Jordan. He then moved to the United States, where he pursued an additional internal medicine residency, followed by a hematology and oncology fellowship, at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City.
Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Hamarneh enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters and skiing and traveling. In addition to English, he speaks fluent Arabic.
