Francisco A. Almeida, MD, MS, is an Interventional Pulmonologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta, where he works closely with patients’ multidisciplinary cancer care teams to help accurately diagnose and stage cancer. He has expertise in a wide range of advanced, minimally invasive procedures to treat conditions affecting the airways, lungs, mediastinum and pleura.
At the hospital, Dr. Almeida diagnoses and treats both benign and cancerous conditions using a wide range of therapies and treatments, including flexible and rigid bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, as well as electromagnetic and robotic navigational bronchoscopy. As an interventional pulmonologist, he performs biopsies, treats obstructions of the central airways and helps patients with chronic pulmonary disease manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
“I am dedicated to collaborating closely as a member of each patient's cancer team to support effective communication among physicians, patients and their families,” Dr. Almeida says. “A significant aspect of my role involves participating in the diagnosis and staging process for patients with suspected or confirmed lung cancer, and for me, it’s a matter of compassion to obtain biopsies promptly and reduce the number of procedures required for patients during diagnosis and staging.”
Dr. Almeida earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Ceara School of Medicine in Fortaleza, Brazil. He also holds a master’s degree in pharmacology from the Jefferson Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Philadelphia. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Jefferson Einstein Health Philadelphia Hospital in Philadelphia, as well as an additional internal medicine residency at Walter Cantidio University Hospital in Fortaleza, Brazil. He then pursued a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a subspecialty fellowship in interventional pulmonology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
A member of professional organizations including the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Association of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, Dr. Almeida is dedicated to educating physicians on effective approaches to diagnosing and staging lung cancer and has more than 130 publications, abstract presentations and book chapters to his name. He has been recognized with a number of awards, including inclusion on the Castle Connolly list of “Best Doctors” for 10 consecutive years.
In addition to English, Dr. Almeida speaks Portuguese and some Spanish. Outside of City of Hope, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, as well as hiking and running.
