About Me

Eileen P. Smith, M.D., is the Francis & Kathleen McNamara Distinguished Chair and Professor of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, where she has spent 30 years of her career serving patients and building the reputation of the institution as a center of excellence for treating blood cancers and disorders.

Dr. Smith earned her medical degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where she also completed a fellowship in hematology. She began her career at City of Hope in 1988 as a fellow in bone marrow transplantation and medical oncology. Earlier in her career, she also served in the National Health Service Corps and continues to be actively involved in the Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research (PRIM&R) project.

Dr. Smith’s current research includes leading a clinical trial that studies the impact of giving patients two sequential, or “tandem,” doses of their own healthy stem cells within a shorter time frame.

Patient reviews
The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible City of Hope patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five- star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient's experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, City of Hope.
