Dennis Choat, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained Colorectal Surgeon at City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta and City of Hope Cancer Center Paces Ferry who has more than three decades of experience in his field.
“I chose colorectal surgery in particular because I had an interest in helping patients with issues of the colon and bowel, such as inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal cancers,” he says.
In his role at City of Hope, Dr. Choat brings deep expertise to a wide range of procedures for cancers of the colon and rectum, including minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques, transanal natural orifice procedures and colonoscopies.
“I wanted to help cancer patients in a very direct way, striving to help them feel as if the procedures I’m performing will make a life-changing, sometimes lifesaving, impact on their lives,” he says.
Dr. Choat earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, then completed a residency in general surgery at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
A member of multiple professional associations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Medical Association of Atlanta and the Piedmont Colorectal Society, Dr. Choat has held a variety of educational and leadership roles throughout his career, from being a surgical instructor to serving as medical staff president and chair of general surgery.
Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Choat is an avid golfer who enjoys paddleboarding, fishing and connecting with great outdoors.
