Deepa Dharshani Nanayakkara, M.D., is an infectious disease specialist who feels grateful to be part of the City of Hope® family, where patients receive compassionate, leading-edge care and innovative treatments.
Dr. Nanayakkara focuses on caring for patients with weakened immune systems, particularly those who have received organ or stem cell transplants. Her research interests include preventing and treating fungal infections in transplant patients and improving screening for infections before transplantation.
She earned her medical degree from the University of Nevada and a Master of Science in human nutrition from Columbia University in New York. She completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency, followed by fellowships in adult infectious diseases at the University of Southern California and transplant infectious diseases at UCLA.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Nanayakkara conducted research on HIV/AIDS at the World Health Organization in Switzerland, at a nonprofit organization in India and at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
Originally from Kandy, Sri Lanka, she enjoys spending time with loved ones, traveling internationally and staying active.
