David Bryan Stewart, Sr., MD, MHA, FACS, FASCRS, is a board-certified colorectal surgeon dedicated to ensuring patients in the Chicagoland area and beyond have access to up-to-date treatment options for colon and rectal cancer. As Chief of Surgery and Medical Director of Surgical Operations, Dr. Stewart also oversees all surgical services and operations across our Chicago-area locations.
With more than 20 years’ experience in his field, Dr. Stewart is a nationally recognized leader in the field of colorectal cancer. But he knew he wanted to pursue a medical career from a very young age.
“One of my earliest memories was wanting to be a physician,” he recalls. “As time went on, I became more and more motivated by the opportunity to alleviate suffering and improve patients’ quality of life.”
Dr. Stewart is committed to providing patients who require surgery access to robotic techniques. For patients with rectal cancer, the option of organ preserving treatment, where the cancer might be curable without surgery, is a significant part of his practice. Additionally, he is committed to ensuring that each of his patients is made aware of all their treatment options, and good communication before and after surgery is a hallmark of his care.
After earning his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, Dr. Stewart completed his internship and residency at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, followed by clinical and research fellowships in colon and rectal surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He also completed a master’s in health administration at Southern Illinois University. Prior to joining City of Hope, he served as Division Chief of General Surgery at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, following prior leadership roles at institutes including University of Arizona and Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
A physician-scholar and national leader in colorectal cancer, Dr. Stewart serves on the editorial boards for several leading journals, including JAMA Surgery and Annals of Surgery. He has held leadership roles with the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, contributes to national guidelines that shape surgical cancer care and has conducted National Institutes of Health-funded research. Dr. Stewart has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and invited articles.
Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Stewart enjoys spending time with his four children and participating in community efforts with a humanitarian focus.
