David Hamming,MD

David Hamming, MD, joined City of Hope^® in July 2021, bringing with him 12 years of experience as an Orthopedic Surgeon. At City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago, he works to improve patients’ quality of life by addressing pain and increasing mobility, with expertise in arthroscopic and other minimally invasive procedures designed to reduce side effects and accelerate healing. Dr. Hamming specializes in stabilizing fractures and replacing joints damaged by malignancies of all types that have spread to the arms and legs, as well as injuries caused by other cancer-related conditions.

“The success of clinical partnerships depends on trust and communication,” he says. “I do everything I can to be a compassionate, positive voice during the difficulties my patients may encounter during their cancer journey. It’s important to me that they know they have all the time with me they need, and that they can ask me any question on their mind.”

Dr. Hamming was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his father, who was also an orthopedic surgeon. After earning his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Minnesota and a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine with Steadman Hawkins Clinic Denver in Colorado.

Since the early 2000s, he’s presented and served as a contributing author on a number of topics, including the application of murine bioreactor, how GROalpha is expressed in adenocarcinoma of the colon, and how vascularized scaffolds generate novel host bone.

An active member of his community, Dr. Hamming has served as team physician for the American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves franchise and several Chicago-area high schools. During his training, he worked as volunteer medical personnel at high school football games.
