Daniel Schmolze, M.D., is a pathologist at City of Hope® who leads the breast pathology group and serves as medical director of digital pathology. In this role, he is helping to advance how pathology is performed by guiding the department’s transition to a fully digital workflow — an innovation that supports faster, more accurate diagnoses for patients.
Before becoming a physician, Dr. Schmolze worked as a scientific software engineer at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed his pathology residency and breast pathology fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Dr. Schmolze has authored numerous scholarly papers and developed publicly available software. His current research focuses on using artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve clinical digital pathology workflows. He is a member of the College of American Pathologists and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
