Chandana Banerjee, MD, MPA, HDMC, serves as the dean, director and designated institutional official for graduate medical education at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, where she is also an associate professor in the Department of Supportive Care Medicine. Dr. Banerjee’s clinical focus on hospice and palliative care.
Dr. Banerjee founded the City of Hope Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship and created the Cancer Pain Rotation for Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles, which has become part of the core curriculum for Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. She also launched and directs the End of Life Symposium, first hosted at City of Hope in 2019 and endowed by Arthur Riggs, PhD. Additionally, she leads Schwartz Rounds, chairs the End of Life Option Act Subcommittee and serves on the Continuing Medical Education and Ethics and Quality of Life committees.
Nationally, Dr. Banerjee is chair-elect of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine’s (AAHPM) Medical Aid in Dying Special Interest Group. From 2019 to 2022, she served as chair-elect, chair, and past chair of AAHPM’s Humanities and Spirituality Special Interest Group and she remains a member of the institution’s Quarterly Editorial Board, which reviews abstracts and research articles for the organization. A prolific author and speaker, Dr. Banerjee has written numerous articles and book chapters and is currently editing a Springer Publishing CTAR series volume on end-of-life care, cultural perspectives on death and bereavement. She also serves on the board of directors for Compassion & Choices and contributes to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Fatigue Panel. Her leadership includes excellence in teaching, curriculum design, faculty mentorship and program development.
Dr. Banerjee earned her undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Connecticut in Mansfield, followed by a master’s in public administration from New York University and a medical degree from Saba University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency and fellowship in adult hospice and palliative medicine at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles and is certified as a Hospice Medical Director.
Named a Health Equity Scholar in the Cambridge Health Alliance Center for Health Equity Education & Advocacy’s 2021–2022 cohort, Dr. Banerjee is also a published poet. Her first poetry collection, Ashen Leaves, debuted in 2020, followed by Neruda in Bed in 2021.
