M.D.
Hematologist-Oncologist
Brian Ball, M.D., is a hematologist-oncologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, where he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes and is committed to improving outcomes for patients facing these complex diseases. Dr. Ball’s interest in myeloid cancers began during his undergraduate years in Boston, where he worked in a research lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. There, he was inspired by the compassionate and skilled oncologists who were working to better understand the genetic underpinnings of leukemia.
Dr. Ball earned his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, where he also helped lead the Refugee Health Clinic. He went on to a fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, serving as chief fellow. Dr. Ball has received numerous accolades, including Yale’s Global Health Scholar award, which allowed him to gain clinical experience in South Africa.
In the research lab, Dr. Ball focuses on understanding how leukemia cells resist current therapies and discovering new strategies to overcome this resistance—particularly in the area of apoptosis-targeted treatments. His work in this space was recognized with the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Young Investigator Award.
