Hematologist-Oncologist
Akyavta Kallam, M.D., was inspired to pursue medicine by her mother, a gynecologist. Today at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, she carries that legacy forward as a compassionate hematologist-oncologist, specializing in the treatment of lymphoma. For Dr. Kallam, the most meaningful part of her work is the opportunity to guide and support patients and their families through some of life’s most challenging moments. She is also deeply committed to research, helping to bring forward the next generation of cancer treatments.
Dr. Kallam has special expertise in novel immunotherapies,chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy and stem cell transplantation. Her research focuses on creating and studying new targeted and immune-based therapies for both non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphoma.
Before joining City of Hope in 2023, Dr. Kallam served as an assistant professor of hematology-oncology at the University of Nebraska. She has co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific studies and plays a key role in clinical trials, including as principal investigator on several. Her work has been published in respected journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology and Expert Review of Hematology. She also helps shape national care standards through her involvement with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s expert panels for blood cancers.
Outside of her clinical and research work, Dr. Kallam enjoys traveling, practicing yoga, trying new foods and spending time with her family.
