About Me

Arjun Gupta, M.D., F.A.S.C.O., is a board-certified medical oncologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix, where he diagnoses and treats a wide range of cancer types, with a focus on gastrointestinal cancers, as well as supportive care and symptom management.

Dedicated to offering compassionate and innovative care for patients, Dr. Gupta also recognizes the importance of supporting patients as they manage the symptoms and side effects of cancer and its treatments, and also their caregivers as they balance so much on their plate.

“As a gastrointestinal medical oncologist, I work closely with patients’ multidisciplinary teams to provide the highest quality cancer care to those affected by gastrointestinal cancer,” Dr. Gupta says. “Before joining City of Hope, I was already aware of the focus on whole person-centered care. But seeing the institute’s emphasis on supporting patients and caregivers together confirmed to me that City of Hope was the place I wanted to be.”

Prior to joining City of Hope, Dr. Gupta served patients at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he held positions as an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation and as a physician at the university’s M Health Fairview Clinics and Surgery Center. His work as an educator and scholar has been recognized with multiple awards.

Dr. Gupta attended medical school at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, before moving to the United States to take on a residency at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he also served as chief resident. He completed his medical training with a fellowship in medical oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

A physician-scholar with a robust research agenda. Dr. Gupta has served as principal investigator on multiple clinical trials focusing on gastrointestinal cancers and supportive care medicine, and has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. His research has been funded by organizations including Arnold Ventures, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Cancer Society. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer and is also vice-chair of the Symptom Intervention Committee for the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. His research team leads pioneering work on defining, measuring, and intervening on ‘’time toxicity’’ – the time-related burdens of cancer care.

Dr. Gupta is married and enjoys spending time with his wife, playing cricket and hiking. In addition to English, he speaks Hindi.

Patient reviews
The patient ratings and comments on this page are obtained from an external Press Ganey® outpatient survey provided to all eligible City of Hope patients within one to two weeks of their treatment occurrence. Raw data from the answers to the survey questions about our physicians are calculated by Press Ganey into a one- to five- star rating. In the spirit of transparency, all patient comments are posted as written by the patient, whether they are positive or negative. We only exclude comments if they are deemed to be slanderous or libelous, contain profanity or vulgar language, or do not relate to the patient's experience with the doctor involved. As a result, the comments are the views and opinions of the patients surveyed and are not endorsed by, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of, City of Hope.
