Andrew Leitner, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management physician who is a leader in the field of supportive care. He serves as Arthur M. Coppola Family Chair in Supportive Care Medicine and chief of the Division of Interventional Pain Management at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte.
After graduating from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, Dr. Leitner earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he also pursued advanced fellowship training in interventional pain management.
Dr. Leitner joined City of Hope in 2015 and played a central role in developing the interventional pain management program, then formalizing it as a division within the Department of Supportive Care Medicine. A recognized authority in cancer-related pain, he has presented his work at regional and national forums, published extensively and contributed to a textbook on cancer pain management. He understands that pain is both deeply personal and highly disruptive, and he customizes treatment strategies to improve function and enhance patients’ quality of life.
Valued for his detail-oriented leadership, Dr. Leitner served as vice chair of clinical affairs for the department from before being named chair of the Department of Supportive Care Medicine and Arthur M. Coppola Family Chair in Supportive Care Medicine in 2023. In this role, he helps guide one of the nation’s first fully integrated supportive care programs, which is now broadening access to evidence-based, patient-centered care and setting a model for national standards in supportive care.
