Alicia Nykiel, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, is an Advanced Practice Provider at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago, working in the Department of Surgical Oncology to provide compassionate, person-centered care to patients undergoing treatment for a wide range of cancer types.
Nykiel was inspired to pursue a medical career in part by the experiences of her family members and friends who have battled cancer.“
What I remember most from these experiences are the providers and nurses who took such good care of them and put our minds at ease knowing they were being well cared for,” says Nykiel. “This sparked my interest in oncology and inspired me to make a difference for these patients.”
Since joining City of Hope in 2025, Nykiel has worked with patients diagnosed with cancer types including gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers, melanoma, lung cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. She has expertise in performing and assisting with multiple procedures, including punch biopsy and sentinel lymph node biopsy, esophagectomy, Whipple procedure and many types of colorectal procedures.
Nykiel earned her doctorate in nursing practice at DePaul University in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Before training as a nurse practitioner, she spent multiple years serving as a registered nurse in a surgical-trauma intensive care at a Level I trauma center.
A member of multiple professional organizations including the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Nykiel has advanced practice provider training and is certified to provide basic life support and advanced cardiopulmonary life support. She is also passionate about promoting lung cancer and colorectal cancer screening.
“Accepting a position as a surgical oncology nurse practitioner at City of Hope was an easy choice, because it combined two things I am passionate about both personally and professionally, which are oncology and surgery,” Nykiel says.
Outside of City of Hope, Nykiel enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and French bulldog, traveling, going to concerts, and participating in outdoor activities. She also frequently volunteers in her local community.
