High-Risk Breast Cancer Program, Atlanta

For generations, women lived with a high risk of developing breast cancer, most without ever knowing it. Today, with advances in genetic testing for breast cancer, genomics and breast cancer screening, and a wealth of knowledge about potential causes, women at high risk can take steps to reduce their chances of developing breast cancer.

At City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta, our High-Risk Breast Cancer Program offers services for women who know they’re at risk for breast cancer or may be concerned about their likelihood of developing the disease.

No one can predict if or when she’ll get breast cancer. But the multidisciplinary team of cancer experts, genetic counselors and supportive care providers at City of Hope Atlanta will work with you to determine the level of your risk and empower you to take control.

What is high-risk breast cancer?

Many factors are known to contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer. They include:

  • Family history of cancer, especially breast and ovarian cancers
  • Inherited mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, RTPEN and/or TP53 genes
  • Tobacco use
  • Obesity
  • Alcohol use or abuse
  • Radiation therapy before the age of 30
  • Use of hormone replacement therapy
  • Timing of prior pregnancies
  • History of breastfeeding
  • Early or late menopause
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Abnormalities in breast tissue
  • Age

At the High-Risk Breast Cancer Program at City of Hope Atlanta, our cancer experts will take these and other factors into account to help determine your breast cancer risk. We’ll also work with you to determine which steps, if any, you need to take to monitor your risk and help you identify lifestyle decisions to help reduce your risk.

Get started with the Risk Management Tool

City of Hope has developed the Risk Management Tool (RMT) to help you determine whether you’re at an elevated risk of developing breast or other common cancers. It only takes a few minutes to answer some basic questions about yourself, your family history and your lifestyle. Once you’ve finished answering the questions, the RMT checks your risk for cancer and offers you an action plan to help you manage your risk and determine whether further tests or other interventions may be recommended.
