Look Good Feel Better® Program Helps Women Overcome Side Effects of Cancer Treatment

Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) in Chicago is proud to partner with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to offer Look Good Feel Better®, a free national public service program to help women cope with the appearance of side effects from cancer treatment. The complimentary program will be offered four times a year at CTCA® in Zion, Ill., with the first session scheduled for Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Any woman undergoing treatment at any facility is welcome to register.

In addition to the physical and emotional stresses that cancer can cause, side effects of treatment can be devastating to a woman’s self-esteem. Common side effects from chemotherapy, surgery and/or radiation may include hair loss, changes in skin tone, weight gain or loss and/or scarring. The Look Good Feel Better program will help patients navigate their emotions and combat some of these side effects using makeup techniques.

Offered through a national collaboration of the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the ACS, the Processional Beauty Association and CTCA, Look Good Feel Better empowers women to reclaim their sense of control, confidence and self-esteem. The program offers complimentary group, individual and online educational sessions dealing with temporary hair loss as well as skin, complexion and nail changes due to the side effects of cancer treatment. These two-hour group workshops are led by volunteer beauty experts and CTCA salon technicians who teach makeup application techniques and offer skin and nail care guidance. They also demonstrate how to manage hair loss using wigs, turbans, scarves and accessories. All women who attend the course will receive a free makeup kit.

“We are honored to partner with the American Cancer Society and offer the Look Good Feel Better program to our patients and surrounding communities,” said Kim Piercy, Director of Guest Services at CTCA in Chicago. “We hope this opportunity will give them peace of mind, help them connect with others in similar situations and allow them to find comfort with their inner and outer beauty.”

“I have worked with and met hundreds of patients as a licensed cosmetologist and understand how cancer treatment side effects can affect them,” said Meg Hart, Salon Technician at CTCA in Chicago. “It is very important that women pamper themselves during this new life journey. Many women undergoing treatment have told me that when they look better, they feel better, just like the title of the program states.”

Look Good Feel Better will be offered four times a year at the CTCA hospital in Zion, with the 2018 sessions scheduled as follows:

  • Saturday, March 24, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Tuesday, June 19, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 22, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Wednesday, December 5, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
