Meet with our cancer experts in as little as 24 hours

cancer experts iHaving to wait or delay getting answers about your recent cancer diagnosis may add needless stress and anxiety to your life.

For that reason, we have created a program that allows qualifying patients to meet with a cancer expert in as little as 24 hours.

The program is open to patients who:

  • Live within a 100-mile radius of the hospital
  • Were diagnosed with cancer less than a year ago, with or without treatment, and/or have met with a physician and there is a suspicion of cancer

Why travel to Southwestern?

travel

Seventy-one percent of our patients travel to Southwestern from outside Oklahoma for their cancer care. Why? When they are here, they’re not battling traffic to and from appointments, and they can meet with experts from multiple disciplines. Our experts work across the hall from one another—not across town. We coordinate the many aspects of patient care—from answering financial questions to scheduling treatments and arranging follow-up visits—removing as many barriers as possible so that our patients can focus on one thing: getting better. Our doctors also work in close coordination with one another, communicating and collaborating on patient care throughout your treatment.

Why we are different

At Southwestern, our cancer experts deliver advanced treatments and leading-edge technologies all under one roof, so you don’t have to drive around to multiple locations for treatment visits or doctor appointments. At the same time, we add evidence-informed supportive therapies to your personalized treatment plan, to help you manage cancer-related side effects and maintain the strength and stamina you need to continue treatment and get back to your life.

Each patient is assigned a multidisciplinary care team, led by a medical oncologist and coordinated by a care manager, who answers your questions, manages your treatment schedule and assists in the logistics involved in the cancer journey.

Clinical experts

Our doctors and clinicians treat cancer, and only cancer, so they are familiar with our patients’ unique needs and trained on the wide array of treatments and therapies available. At Southwestern, our team of experts includes specialists with advanced training and experience in treating specific types of cancer, such as breast, lung, colorectal, head and neck and blood/hematologic. We also have physicians who specialize in advanced treatments and reconstructive plastic surgery techniques.

These doctors are part of an extended team that treats not just the cancer but the whole patient, tailoring each treatment plan to the patient’s individual needs.

Your cancer care team will be led by a medical oncologist and coordinated by a care manager. Depending on your needs, it may also include a surgical and radiation oncologist, registered nurses, licensed dietitians, naturopathic providers, mind-body therapists, pain management physicians, physical therapists and/or spiritual support providers.

Our patient-centered model is designed to provide personalized cancer care for each patient. Having a dedicated team may offer a number of benefits, including speed of care, patient-focused treatment, better communication among your doctors and coordinated care.

At Southwestern, our surgical oncologists offer a wide range of tools to treat head and neck, breast, lung and other cancers, with plastic and reconstructive surgery options available to help patients restore their function, appearance and sense of normalcy after tumor-removal operations. In addition, our radiation oncologists offer a wide variety of radiation treatments to accurately target tumors while also employing technologies designed to reduce the risk of radiation exposure to critical organs.

Minimally invasive procedures such as robotic and laparoscopic surgeries are also available when medically appropriate, as are targeted drug therapies and immunotherapy options in treating a number of cancers. Patients who meet certain qualifications, especially those with breast or lung cancer, may benefit from genomic tumor profiling or genetic tests that measure inherited risk factors.
